An event to give living legacy-holders their flowers; a portrait revealed before the people who love them. A ceremony of living veneration
We reveal the portrait of Lesley "Lady Clipper" Bryant
Every community has a few people who see an empty lot and plant a garden. Women have done this work for generations, often because no one else would, and often because the world handed them two closed doors instead of one. The duties arrive uninvited. They answer fearlessly.
Lesley Bryant answered on U Street. She took a barbershop, a room that long belonged to men, and opened the windows. Now the chairs fill with neighbors and the barbers she trained, and the walls glow with work from local artists. The shop works like a kitchen table. People come in for a cut and stay for the conversation.
We honor Lesley because she shows how a community learns to hold itself up. Her legacy is a torch, passed from one to another. Let us celebrate HERstory. You are called to witness.
